HEADTEACHER WEEKLY BLOG
The theme this week from the gospel is Choices. We all have important choices to make throughout our lives and Jesus recognizes that following Him, doing the right thing is not always the easiest choice. When we make the wrong choices they affect people around us but often we disappoint ourselves too. None of us are perfect and we all get it wrong sometimes; sometimes it is a deliberate choice and sometimes it is a thoughtless choice that lets us down. The important thing is to make sure that we acknowledge our mistakes, apologise for them and put things in place to make sure they do not happen again.
I hope that as a headteacher I have always had the humility to admit when things have gone wrong and explain how I have learned from that and taken steps to ensure it doesn’t happen again. Just because we rarely get complaints does not mean that I stop looking for things to improve. Every year I write a school improvement plan and report on its progress to governors. This is why we change things, to make things better. Next year Mrs McKinnon will be writing that improvement plan and will be seeking to bring about that improvement. She will have new skills, new knowledge and new ideas that she can bring to our school and I know that you will support her in the choices she makes just as you have supported me.
One little memory about choices: I was role playing with some Reception class children in assembly. The story was the road to Emmaus. In the story the risen Jesus is not recognized by his disciples until he breaks bread and shares it with them. I brought a large pitta bread for “Jesus” to break which he did. He tore off two tiny pieces for each disciple and then proceeded to eat the massive piece he had left. Not a choice that Jesus himself would have made I fear.
Have a good weekend
