Commonwealth Day 2023
On Monday 13th March 2023, a group of Year 5 and Year 6 children were lucky enough to represent our school, Penwortham and Lancashire in the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey. We believe that this is the first time that a school in our local area has been selected!
After a very early start with the children taking the train down to London from Preston, we were met by our local MP, Katherine Fletcher MP, and her team for a tour of the Houses of Parliament. We saw the Great Hall, the House of Commons and the House of Lords too! It was absolutely fantastic. After lunch, we hot-footed it to the nearby Westminster Abbey and after numerous security checks were seated at the front section to greet the Commonwealth parade as it passed. There was an incredible atmosphere in the Abbey as celebrities, dignities and royals paraded past. It was all televised so our families were able to watch as Princess Catherine smiled at us and Princess Sophie gave us a discreet wave.
Afterwards, Mrs McKinnon and Mrs Edmondson took us on a short walking tour of some more sights of London (most of us hadn't been before but we'd love to go back) before a pizza tea and back on the train from Euston. What a fantastic day!
