Thank you to Mrs Calland - the Head of Art at All Hallows - for allowing us to enjoy an afternoon learning all about creating tiles from clay.
We have had a wonderful afternoon turning our Roman Mosaic designs into individual clay tiles. We have used guidelines, rolling pins and mats to roll and cut our tiles. We then transferred our design image onto a further piece of clay and carefully cut this out before imprinting different textures onto the tile. Once we were happy with our designs we used the slurry from our pinch pots to stick the pieces together. The tiles will be fired in the kiln and we will be painting them next week. We have learnt lots of technical vocabulary associated with clay - cross hatching, slurry, imprinting, kiln, fire and glaze. Finally we worked together to tidy everything away. Mrs Calland was very impressed with how well we worked!
